Meet WWE

Big hits, mat-slamming moves, charismatic wrestlers with larger-than-life personas, and an electrifying atmosphere both in the ring and from the ecstatic fans in the stands, that’s just a little preview of what WWE is all about. This adrenaline-fueled, hard-hitting sport features athletes of the first order who perform jaw-dropping moves and stunts. The wrestlers are often characterized by their unique, exuberant costumes and magnetic personalities. Some of the legendary names that have grazed the WWE ring are John Cena, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, The Undertaker, Roman Reigns, and old-school wrestlers such as Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant.

It’s been decades of WWE events all over America, Canada, Mexico, and beyond — which means a lot of brutal encounters, cheering championships, and entertainment of the highest level. The biggest events in WWE, the ones that you can’t miss are:

  • Wrestlemania, the grandest stage of them all
  • SummerSlam, the biggest party of the summer
  • Royal Rumble, where it’s every man or woman for themselves
  • Survivor Series, where it’s all about team warfare

These events have given us countless memorable moments and have cemented WWE’s place in sports-entertainment history, and will continue to grow in popularity. Let's take a closer look at this adrenaline-fueled sport — if you haven’t heard of it, we’re sure you’ll end up as psyched as we are!

Everything You Need to Know about the WWE

Let's get ready to rrrrrrrrumble! With 13 WWE pay-per-view events already in the books and even more to go this year, it can be tough to keep track of the champions, upcoming events, and the best matchups of the year. This is especially true of the main WWE events — WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, and Survivor Series. Don't worry, we've got you covered!

What Does WWE Mean?

WWE is a prominent professional wrestling promotion, the most popular in the sport. WWE stands for World Wrestling Entertainment, and it features scripted and choreographed matches involving professional wrestlers.

Now, choreographed doesn’t mean the huge hits and unhinged moves you see are fake; on the contrary, the pain is real, only it’s rehearsed to avoid serious injuries! The wrestlers take on roles as heroes, villains, and various other characters within carefully scripted storylines.

There are various WWE events throughout the year, and each one has a narrative that builds tension during the event, which culminates in different singles matches, group battles, and main championship events.

Wrestlers' success in the WWE ring doesn’t only rely on their physical abilities, but also on their capacity to engage the audience with their character portrayal and microphone skills. A charismatic personality will take you far in the WWE, as it is a unique blend of sports and entertainment.

The WWE Brands

The WWE is divided into three brands: Raw, SmackDown, and NXT.

Raw is undeniably WWE's flagship program, having been on the air since 1993. It is renowned for combining riveting entertainment with top-tier wrestling. Broadcast live every Monday night, Raw showcases some of the company's most prominent stars, and its episodes are marked by long-standing rivalries, high-stakes matches, and unforgettable moments.

SmackDown initially relied more on taped broadcasts, placing a heavier emphasis on wrestling over promos. However, it has transitioned to live broadcasts every Friday night and has enjoyed substantial viewership since February 2022, averaging approximately 2 million viewers per episode. A promotional partnership with FOXTV has significantly expanded WWE's global reach, allowing them to connect with an even broader fanbase.

NXT, often considered WWE's developmental territory, is where emerging talent can refine their skills before leaping to the main roster. It serves as a training ground for promising individuals who may lack experience but possess undeniable potential. While "NXT" has historically been considered a secondary brand compared to "Raw" and "SmackDown," it plays a pivotal role in nurturing and showcasing the most promising talents, many of whom have gone on to become WWE superstars, such as Seth Rollins and Finn Balor.

What Are the Most Important WWE Events?

The company’s biggest wrestling events are WrestleMania, Summerslam, Royal Rumble, and Survivor Series, and each is different in its own way!

Wrestlemania

WrestleMania is the flagship event of the WWE and it is regarded as the “Super Bowl of wrestling” — it’s the one event that you can’t miss! This was the WWE’s first-ever PPV-produced event and is the most successful and longest-running professional wrestling event in history. Wrestlemania has been shown through PPV since 1985 and it has been available to live stream through the WWE Network since 2014.

The main WrestleMania show is about three hours long and features the biggest matches of the night. The pre-show is about an hour long and features smaller matches and other entertainment.

The main event of WrestleMania is usually a match for the WWE Championship. However, other world titles may also be featured in the main event, such as the World Heavyweight Championship (2003-2013) and the WWE Universal Championship (since 2017).

In addition to the main event, WrestleMania typically features a number of other matches, including matches for other championships, matches involving celebrities, and matches featuring fan-favorite wrestlers.

Best WrestleManias of all Time

The X-Seven edition in 2001 was for some the unofficial culmination of the Attitude Era, and it featured something for everyone: gritty professional wrestling from Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle, high-flying athleticism from The Hardy Boyz, Dudley Boyz, and Edge and Christian, a brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H, a spectacle from Vince and Shane McMahon, and creativity from Kane, Raven, and Big Show. The main event was a showdown between The Rock and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin that encompassed everything that made the Attitude Era special.

Another edition that's contending to be one the best WrestleManias of all time is the 19th outing, in 2003. Shawn Michaels defeated Chris Jericho in the standout match of the night. Hulk Hogan demolished Mr. McMahon in a Street Fight. Trish Stratus reclaimed the Women's Title in a thrilling triple threat match and Steve Austin faced off against The Rock in his final match in 19 years, with The Rock securing his long-awaited WrestleMania victory. Triple H defeated Booker T for the World Heavyweight Title, and Brock Lesnar dethroned Kurt Angle to end his WWE Championship reign. Without a doubt a memorable day for WWE fans.

SummerSlam

Summerslam, or “The Biggest Party of the Summer” and it's considered the second most important WWE event of the year. In 1992, Summerslam made history by hosting its first major pay-per-view event outside of North America at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London, England. The event drew a remarkable reported attendance of 80,355 fans. As of April 2023, WWE still regards this as the seventh-largest live gate in its storied history.

The event is held for wrestlers from the Raw and SmackDown promotions, and like in WrestleMania, there’s a series of preliminary matchups that lead to the main event that follows a cleverly crafted storyline. A difference with the main event of the WWE is that the Summerslam takes place in just one day and during the summer, usually in August or the end of July.

SummerSlam Memorable Moments

The event has left some crazy memories among wrestling fans, but one that is fresh on the minds of everyone was what happened to Becky Lynch at Summerslam 2022. Becky Lynch and Bianca Belair's rivalry came full circle in this edition in Nashville. Becky suffered a separated shoulder during the match but fought through the pain to deliver an unforgettable performance. Belair won the WWE Raw Women's Championship, but Lynch showcased her never-say-die spirit and won even more hearts in the WWE universe.

Another memorable SummerSlam moment was a match that made two generational talents clash, The Rock defended the WWE Undisputed Championship against the up-and-coming Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XIX. The memorable moment came when Lesnar executed a picture-perfect Shooting Star Press from the top rope. However, he missed his target and crashed hard into the canvas. Despite the miss, this daring maneuver showcased Lesnar's athleticism and fearlessness.

Lesnar's Shooting Star Press attempt is considered one of the most memorable moments in WrestleMania history, even though it ended in failure. It is a testament to Lesnar's incredible athleticism and willingness to take risks. The move also helped to solidify Lesnar as a future WWE superstar.

Royal Rumble

The third most important wrestling event of the year is the Royal Rumble. It’s highly entertaining, as the rules and the event in general are different from the ones previously mentioned. But basically, two wrestlers start in the ring and a new competitor enters every 90 seconds. A wrestler can only be eliminated by going over the top rope with both feet touching the floor outside. The winner of the Royal Rumble match gets to choose the champion of their choice to face at WrestleMania, so there are big things at stake. This format is for both men’s and women’s categories, so it’s a full day of fast-paced wrestling, fighting, and huge hits.

What's the Longest Royal Rumble Time?

It’s an absolutely absorbing to-watch way of competing, as all your favorite wrestlers join the ring in what turns out to be absolute carnage. This is one of the most physically and mentally demanding events in the WWE schedule, as the athletes have to be on their toes for long periods of time in order to win. The longest Royal Rumble time spent on the ring belongs to Gunther, with an astonishing time of 1:11:40 on the 2023 edition.

Daniel Bryan is another fighter who claims the title of longest Royal Rumble time with 1:16:05. Bryan's time was set in a 50-man rumble, and not in a traditional 30-man rumble, so that’s why the time set by Gunther is the record.

If we look at the longest Royal Rumble time as a whole, we have to head to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2018. This event marketed as “The Greatest Royal Rumble” was the first time that 50 of WWE's top superstars battled it out, resulting in a marathon match that lasted an impressive 1 hour and 17 minutes that no other edition has come close to.

Survivor Series

The fourth event we want to highlight is the Survivor Series, it’s got it all, huge fights for both men and women, team clashes, and dramatic finales. Generally held on the week of Thanksgiving, the Survivor Series is known for the elimination tag team matches that typically feature teams of four or five wrestlers against each other.

The match begins with one wrestler from each team in the ring. The remaining wrestlers enter the ring one by one at regular intervals. The match ends when only one team has all of its members remaining in the ring. The winning team is determined by pinfall, submission, surrender, or knockout, pretty straightforward. Just like the other WWE events, Survival Series also offers singles matches that work up to the main event.

Last year, the WWE branded this event as Survivor Series War Games marking WWE's first main roster event to feature the War Games match and not just the Survivor Series as it had in previous years, as War Games was used solely for the third brand, NXT.

Best Survivor Series of all Time

This question gets thrown around a lot, what is the best Survivor Series of all time? Some would argue that it’s the 2003 edition, it featured skillful storytelling as Stone Cold Steve Austin retired from the ring in 2003, but returned as the co-general manager of Raw. He feuded with Eric Bischoff for eight months, leading to a Survivor Series elimination tag match for the total control of Raw. The match featured every top star on Raw, except Bill Goldberg and Triple H. Shawn Michaels was the last man standing on Team Austin, but was eliminated by Batista after a referee bump. Orton pinned Michaels to give Team Bischoff the win.

For the fans that are more into old-school wrestling, the best Survival Series of all time was held in 1988, as Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Dynamite Kid, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Demolition, the Fabulous Rougeaus, the Powers of Pain, and the Conquistadors put on arguably the greatest Survivor Series tag match in history. Demolition was eliminated in a major upset after manager Mr. Fuji pulled down the middle rope while Smash had the match under control. The Powers of Pain checked on Fuji and accepted him as their new manager, completing a heel turn all in one fell swoop.

The match's climax, where both wrestlers climbed separate ladders to grab the suspended Intercontinental Championship belt, became iconic.
  • Edge and The Undertaker's Hell in a Cell Match (SummerSlam 2008): This brutal encounter inside the Hell in a Cell structure is widely regarded as one of the most brutal matches in WWE history. Edge emerged victorious, spearing The Undertaker through the ring apron and then pinning him for the win.
  • "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's Three Royal Rumble Wins (1997, 1998, 2001): Austin absolutely dominated the Royal Rumble match, winning three championships in just five years, to this day Austin is the only wrestler to have won it on three separate occasions.
  • The Rock's Debut as "The Blue Chipper" (1996): Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's 1996 WWE debut as "The Blue Chipper" marked the beginning of his iconic career. Introduced as a clean-cut, third-generation wrestler, he joined the Nation of Domination faction. Over time, his charisma and mic skills propelled him to stardom, and he transitioned into the legendary "Rock" persona known for catchphrases like "Just Bring It" and "The People's Champ." This transformation laid the groundwork for his remarkable WWE and Hollywood success.
