Celtic Woman is a musical group comprised of four Irish women, Mairéad Carlin, Megan Walsh, violinist Tara McNeill, and original member, Chloë Agnew. Founded in 2005, Celtic Woman has established itself as a genuine cultural phenomenon, celebrating Ireland’s rich musical and cultural history. Named Celtic Woman to represent the spirit of a Celtic female performer, the group brings centuries of Irish cultural and musical tradition to life on stage.
Celtic Woman made their American television debut in early 2005 with their first self-titled PBS concert special, featuring a sold-out performance at the Helix in Dublin. The group released their self-titled debut album shortly thereafter.
The album took the number one spot on Billboard’s World Album Chart, where it would remain for a record-breaking 81 weeks until the release of their second album, 2006’s A Christmas Celebration. With the release of their second album, Celtic Woman cemented their spot atop the chart for an unprecedented total of 112 consecutive weeks.
Although intended to be a one-time-only event, Celtic Woman’s music resonated with US audiences, and the group immediately embarked on their first concert tour of America. Since then, Celtic Woman has maintained a loyal fanbase in the US, as well as a strong presence on television with its Emmy nominated concert specials airing regularly.
Chloë Agnew was among the original Celtic Woman lineup, alongside fellow vocalists Lisa Kelly, Órla Fallon, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt. Agnew was only 15 years old when she joined Celtic Woman, and she remained with the group for nearly 10 years, performing for three US presidents before leaving in 2013.
“We had to pinch ourselves to believe the success of Celtic Woman,” Agnew said of the group’s seemingly overnight success. “We became very much a family. I came to appreciate everyone as I got older. All of them had an impact.”
Celtic Woman’s lineup has evolved several times throughout the years. There have been over a dozen women that have been part of the group, with members leaving to pursue solo projects, then coming back into the fold. Despite enduring so many changes, their signature sound has remained a constant throughout it all, showcasing the members' individual and collaborative talents.
“There’s elements of it that feel like no time has passed, like slipping into an old pair of shoes again,” Agnew says of rejoining Celtic Woman. “But elements of the show have moved into a different phase with a different team from when I was there. There’s great balance of the ‘old world’ with the ‘new world’; I’m glad they’re putting elements of the original show into the new one.”
Celtic Woman’s fusion of traditional and contemporary celebrates Ireland’s rich history while also representing the vibrancy of modern Ireland. Their catalog encompasses everything from contemporary songs to Irish classical favorites like "Danny Boy," as well as originals.
Since 2005, Celtic Woman has released a total of 11 studio albums (including 2016’s Grammy Award nominated Destiny), each of which have debuted at the number one spot on Billboard’s World Album chart. They have scored two Top 10 debuts on Billboard’s Influential Album chart, as well as five Top Five DVDs on Billboard’s Top Video chart. Celtic Woman has been named Billboard’s Number One World Music Artist of the Year an impressive total of six times.
Celtic Woman continues to perform on stages around the world, bringing its stunning concerts to audiences in 23 countries across six continents. A world-class performing collective, their magnificent voices are accompanied by a spectacular ensemble, featuring Irish dancers, bagpipers, and a full band playing a variety of traditional Celtic instruments.
Celtic Woman continues to transcend cultural and national boundaries with their music, celebrating Ireland’s centuries-old-heritage. The group brings together Ireland's finest musical acts with breathtaking stage production, creating a unique concert experience.
