The El Paso Chihuahuas

The El Paso Chihuahuas, a professional Minor League Baseball team, has captured the hearts of the El Paso community and beyond with their fiery spirit and tenacious gameplay. A part of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and a Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, the team debuted in 2014 after the Padres' previous affiliate, the Tucson Padres, relocated to El Paso.

Home to the Chihuahuas, Southwest University Park - an open-air ballpark located in downtown El Paso - is a mecca for baseball enthusiasts. This state-of-the-art stadium, which opened in 2014, boasts a seating capacity of 9,500 and offers panoramic views of the El Paso skyline and the Franklin Mountains. It's more than just a ballpark; it's a testament to the city's love for baseball.

Despite their relatively recent inception, the Chihuahuas have already made a significant mark in MILB history. Their playoff history is impressive, with their crowning achievement being the 2016 PCL championship. The team's success has not only solidified their reputation as a formidable opponent but also fostered an intense rivalry with teams like the Round Rock Express and the Albuquerque Isotopes, making for some thrilling and highly-anticipated match-ups.

Before taking on the beloved name of the El Paso Chihuahuas, the franchise went by several other names. Originally established as the Portland Beavers in 1903, the team has undergone several name changes and relocations. Their journey from the Tucson Padres to the El Paso Chihuahuas marks the latest chapter in their storied history.

One particularly interesting aspect of the Chihuahuas is their unique name, which was chosen through a "Name the Team" contest held by the El Paso team management. The options included Aardvarks, Buckaroos, Chihuahuas, Desert Gators, and Sun Dogs, but it was the Chihuahuas that won the day. It's a name that embodies the team's spirit: small but fierce, embodying the vibrancy and tenacity of the El Paso community.

The El Paso Chihuahuas, despite their youth, have quickly become a cherished part of their city and the larger MILB landscape. Their grit, passion, and resilience make them a team to watch in the coming seasons.
