Ensiferum first emerged in 1995 from Helsinki with a sound that members of the band classify as “melodic folk metal.” Ensiferm (Latin for “sword bearer”) has continually coexisted with various simultaneous side projects taken on by its members. The band has released seven studio albums to date, almost all which feature lead guitar or keyboard, overlaying heavy metal backing rhythms. They frequently use acoustic guitars, and their lyrics center around fantastical, archaic, or historic themes that are grouped with Nordic concepts.
