Known as one of the premier keyboardists and musicians of the progressive era, Rick Wakeman rose to fame as one of the members of prog-rock group Yes between 1971 and 2004. Wakeman’s passion for music was instilled in him from a young age, attending the Royal College of Music until 1969 when he quit school to become a full-time session musician. His early sessions included playing on David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” as well as working with the likes of Elton John, Junior’s Eyes, T. Rex and Cat Stevens. He joined Yes in 1971, playing on some of their most successful albums through 1980. Wakeman kicked off his solo career in 1973, releasing over 90 solo albums including his most successful first three, The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1973), Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1974), and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (1975), all of which were concept albums. His musical styles have continuously evolved over the course of his expansive career. Wakeman has made several television and radio show appearances and has most recently become known for his BBC comedy series Grumpy Old Men, Watchdog, and his radio show Planet Rock (2005-2010). An accomplished author as well, he has written three books including an autobiography and two memoirs. Wakeman has been a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee since 2017 as a member of Yes.
