Singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes started out posting videos of his talents on YouTube and Vine for viewers to see. By 2014, he was the third most-followed musician on Vine. He was picked up by Island Records that same year and released his first single, "Life of the Party," which made him the youngest person to debut in the top 25 of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In 2015, Mendes released his first album, Handwritten, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album made him the youngest artist to debut an album at number one since Justin Bieber. It yielded the massive hit "Stitches" which topped at number one in several countries and put him on the map as a mainstream artist.
His 2016 album Illuminate bolstered his rise to stardom with singles like "Treat You Better" which was certified triple platinum, and "Mercy" which became double platinum. His third single, "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" made him the first artist under 20 to have three number one songs on the Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart. Mendes is also one of five artists to ever debut at number one before the age of 18. In 2018, Mendes was listed on Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
