Swedish melodic death metal rockers Amon Amarth emerged from previous death metal band Scum in the early 1990s. Taking their name from the Sindarin name of Mount Doom (a volcano in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth), Amon Amarth released their debut full-length album Once Sent from the Golden Hall in 1998. The group would go on to drop five additional studio releases before making their mainstream breakthrough with 2008’s Twilight of the Thunder God, which debuted at the number 10 spot on the Swedish album charts and number 50 on the US Billboard 200. Amon Amarth have released a total of 11 studio albums, one compilation album, one EP, and one video album. Their music is characterized by Viking mythology and historical themed lyricism set to heavy metal guitars and vocals.
