The B-52s are a new wave rock band based out of Athens, Georgia. They were no doubt one of the key figures in the new wave movement in America, combining post-punk style music with elements of electronic pop and rock and roll. The group features male and female vocalists, being one of the first non-folk/country bands to introduce that vocal dynamic. The band lineup has stayed consistent with the exception of guitarist Ricky Wilson, who died in 1985. The group was known for having guest musicians contribute to their performance, rounding out the sound of the group.
It is a testament to the dedication of the group, that with the exception of a 1 to 2 year hiatus, the group has for the most part remained together and has consistently toured. They are perhaps most famous for the song Rock Lobster which has been covered in a variety of ways and the infamous hit tune Love Shack. The B-52's are an extremely successful and undoubtedly one of the most unique bands of the late twentieth century.
