CPL Valour FC

The Canadian Premier League (CPL) is a budding professional soccer league, and Valour FC stands out as one of the founding members. Established in 2018, the Winnipeg-based club has quickly gained attention for its tenacity and unique identity. From its fascinating history to its fierce rivalries, let's explore what makes Valour FC a team to watch in the CPL.

Named in honour of the Valour Road heroes from Winnipeg - three soldiers who received the Victoria Cross for their bravery during World War I - Valour FC carries a proud legacy. The club's crest is steeped in symbolism, with the maroon and gold colours representing courage and sacrifice, while the "V" is a nod to the Victoria Cross.

Valour FC calls Investors Group Field home, a modern, 33,000-seat stadium located on the University of Manitoba's Fort Garry campus. The state-of-the-art facility boasts a natural grass playing surface and an electric atmosphere, making it an ideal venue for fans to enjoy top-tier soccer action.

Since its inception, Valour FC has experienced mixed fortunes on the pitch. The club's inaugural season in 2019 saw them finish in fifth place in the Spring season and sixth place in the Fall season. Their fortunes changed in 2020 during the shortened "Island Games" tournament, where they claimed third place in the first round, narrowly missing out on the playoffs.

The 2021 season saw Valour FC make significant strides under head coach Phillip Dos Santos. They finished third in the regular season, securing a spot in the playoffs for the first time in the club's history. Although they bowed out in the semi-finals, the team's progress is a testament to their resilience and determination to succeed.

As with any sports club, rivalries are an essential part of the experience. Valour FC shares a fierce rivalry with fellow CPL club Forge FC, based in Hamilton, Ontario. Termed the "905 Derby," the competition between these two teams has been intense since the league's inception, with matches often producing memorable encounters.

Apart from the on-field battles, Valour FC is also known for its strong community engagement. The club's supporters group, Red River Rising, is passionate and dedicated, creating an unforgettable atmosphere at IG Field during home matches. Furthermore, Valour FC has shown commitment to developing local talent by partnering with the Manitoba Soccer Association and forming their own academy.

In summary, Valour FC is a club with a rich history, ambitious goals, and a growing fan base. As the Canadian Premier League continues to evolve, there's no doubt that this Winnipeg-based club will be one to watch in the coming years.
