Uncle Kracker got his start as a DJ for another well-known musician from his hometown – Kid Rock. Born Matthew Shafer, Uncle Kracker stepped away from the turntables in 2000 to release his debut solo album Double Wide. The album produced the wildly popular Top 10 single "Follow Me," going on to earn a double platinum certification. His second album No Stranger to Shame followed in 2002, featuring his hit cover of Dobie Gray's 1973 hit song "Drift Away." The song hit the number nine spot on the Hot 100 chart and set a a record for most weeks at number one on the Adult Contemporary Chart, remaining there for a total of 28 weeks. Uncle Kracker has since released three additional albums, including Seventy Two and Sunny (2004), Happy Hour (2009), and Midnight Special (2012). He is known for his unique blend of funk and post-grunge rock with hip-hop aesthetics (drawing on his early days as a young rapper).
