Violent Femmes is an American folk punk group that came together in 1980 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The group currently consists of singer, guitarist and songwriter Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie and current drummer John Sparrow. They are known for having an eclectic sound that combines gospel, punk rock, folk music, and the blues. The Violent Femmes have achieved considerable success thanks to their cult fan base. Their 1983 self-titled debut album is their best-selling album, becoming certified platinum and featuring some of the most popular Violent Femmes songs: "Blister In The Sun," "Gone Daddy Gone," "Add It Up," and "Kiss Off." In total, the band has released nine studio albums and fifteen singles during their career. They are one of the most successful alternative rock bands of the 1980s, selling more than 9 million albums by 2005.
