Who Is Jimmy Buffett?
Jimmy Buffett translated his easy-going Gulf Coast persona into more than just a recording career – he created an entire empire comprised of clothing, restaurants, literature, and much more. Born in southern Mississippi and raised in Alabama, Buffett ventured out to Nashville to try and make it in country music in the 1960s. After a rocky start, the singer would later set his sights on Key West, Florida where some may say the rest is history. Following the move, Buffett would evolve into the margarita-fueled, beach-bum character that we all know and love today, developing the tropical/folk-rock style that would endear him to millions of fans across the world for years to come.
Since 1970, Buffett has released over 30 studio albums alongside his Coral Reefer Band, eight of which have earned Gold certifications and nine of which have earned Platinum or Multiplatinum certifications. He has described his music as both “drunken Caribbean rock ‘n’ roll” and “Gulf and Western.” More than just a world-renowned musician, Buffett is also an accomplished author. He has written three number-one best sellers, two of which spent over seven months on The NY Times Best Seller fiction list, and another, A Pirate Looks at Fifty, which went straight to number one upon its 1998 release.
Buffett has famously taken his name and island-escapism lifestyle with him to launch several business ventures, including two themed restaurant chains, licensed Margaritaville clothing, foods, and beverages (including tequila and a brewery responsible for LandShark Lager), a casino, and most recently, real estate. Latitude Margaritaville is a retirement village planned in Daytona Beach by Buffett’s Margaritaville Holdings that is slotted to have a potential of 6,900 homes by its completion. The project has sold a total of 250 lots as of March 2018.
