College Football Bowl Games

College football is one of the most popular sports in the United States, and die-hard fans show up every game in the tens of thousands to watch their favorite local team or alma mater compete. Because the NCAA has so many conferences and teams, playing a large tournament-style postseason doesn't work. So instead, the bowl game system was created.

College football bowl games are awarded to Division I teams that performed well during the regular season. Because the NCAA only allows four teams to compete in the College Football Playoff, bowl games are a way to provide a one-game matchup between winning teams from different conferences that are not in the playoffs. With over 40 bowl games a year, there are plenty of chances for fans to get to the field and be part of the action.

Popular Bowl Games

Though the teams change each year, bowl games are always played on the same neutral fields, and each game has an official sponsor. For example, the Cotton Bowl is always held at AT&T Stadium in Austin, Texas, and the Fiesta Bowl is always played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Here are a few of the most popular bowl games played every year.

Rose Bowl – first played in 1902, the Rose Bowl is the most well-known and heavily watched bowl game in college football, held annually at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. The matchup traditionally consists of the winners of the Big 10 and Pac 12 conferences.

Fiesta Bowl – the Fiesta Bowl takes place in State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, and is one of the newest bowl games in the New Year's Six, with the first Fiesta Bowl held in 1971. The bowl was originally formed to compensate for a lack of Western Atlantic Conference teams being invited to other bowl games.

Sugar Bowl – the Sugar Bowl, first played in 1935, is one of the oldest and most famous bowl games. Since the creation of the College Football Playoffs, the Sugar Bowl has been designated a CFP semifinal game every three years. It is played in the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Orange Bowl – like the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl also rotates as a CFP semifinal game every three years. The game is held in Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, and typically features the top ACC team if they haven't been selected for another playoff game.
