J Balvin was born in Medellin, Colombia before moving to the U.S. at the age of 17. He developed an interest in reggaetón after listening to Daddy Yankee, comparing him to the reggaetón equivalent to Jay Z. Upon learning English in the states, he returned to Medellin. His breakthrough came in 2014 when he released a new track entitled "6 AM", featuring Puerto Rican singer Farruko. The song exploded onto radio in the United States, Latin America, and even Europe, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. Balvin continued his success with 2017's "Mi Gente", which topped the Global Top 50 on Spotify and reached 1 billion views on YouTube. Throughout his short career, Balvin has collaborated with artists such as Pharrell, Major Lazer, Sean Paul, and Cardi B, and continues to sing almost exclusively in Spanish.
