Churchill Downs is most famous for being the home of the Kentucky Derby, the most prominent horse racing event in the world. The track hosted the first-ever Kentucky Derby when it opened its doors in 1875, and has continued to do so ever since (for over 140 years!). Steeped in history and rich with tradition, it's safe to say the race would not be the same if it were held anywhere else. Churchill Downs has also hosted the Breeders' Cup several times over the years.
Churchill Downs covers a sprawling 147 acres of land, making it a site to see for anybody who is in the area. While the seating capacity is only 51,000, Kentucky Derby crowds can reach in excess of 140,000 thanks to standing room only admission.
In 2001, Churchill Downs underwent a three-and-a-half year, $121 million renovation project, adding a new clubhouse, 79 luxury suites, and refurbishing the historic twin spires. Further renovations in 2013 saw the addition of an ultra high-definition video board, now known as "The Big Board," and the addition of 750 speakers around the track.
