One of the most iconic victories in the track's history came in 1979 when Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip battled it out in a last-lap showdown, with Waltrip coming out on top. In 2003, Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch had a similar battle, with Craven edging out Busch in a photo finish that is still talked about today. Other notable winners at Darlington include Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson.
