The industrial-alternative-rock duo Nine Inch Nails consists of founder Trent Reznor and musician/producer Atticus Ross. Founded 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio, NIN released their first album, Pretty Hate Machine, in 1989. After Reznor set up his own label, he produced the 1992 album Broken, which was heavier and harder. It yielded two hits, “Wish” and “Happiness in Slavery,” which went on to earn NIN two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance. Overall, NIN has been nominated for thirteen Grammy Awards, winning two. Reznor was listed on Time Magazine’s list of the year’s most influential people in 1997, while Spin Magazine dubbed him “the most vital artist in music.” In 2014, Rolling Stone placed Nine Inch Nails on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. In 2014, their first year of eligibility, they were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and again the following year.
