Australian metalcore band The Amity Affliction formed in 2002 by a group of high school friends. It would be a few years until the group would start making waves, and in 2005 when vocalist Joel Birch joined the team, they did just that. Amity Affliction has released five studio albums to date, including Severed Ties (2008), Youngbloods (2010), Chasing Ghosts (2012), Let The Ocean Take Me (2014), and This Could Be Heartbreak (2016), the last three of which debuted at the number one spot on the ARIA Charts. The group is known for releasing music that centralizes around common themes dealing with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide, with most of the lyrics stemming from Birch’s past struggles. The band has cited several artists as major influences to them, including As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, The Devil Wears Prada, Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Pantera to name a few.
