The son of country music legend Willie Nelson, Lukas Nelson began his career in the early 2000s playing live shows alongside his father. Nelson teamed up with drummer Anthony LoGerfo in 2007 and the two went on to form the band Promise of the Real one year later. The band would go on to tour with Lukas’ father, this time as an opening act, releasing their debut EP in 2009. Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real would become Nelson’s primary musical outlet over the next few years, producing a pair of full-length albums in 2010 and 2012. Self-described as “cowboy hippie surf rock,” the group has drawn inspiration from two of Nelson’s primary influences; Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young, the latter of which collaborated with the band on his 2015 album The Monsanto Years and brought them along on his subsequent tour. Nelson has remained closely intertwined with his father music, often opening for him and playing in the next set alongside Willie’s band as well. The two collaborated on Willie’s 2012 album Heroes, featuring several father-and-son guitar and vocal duets. Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real have since released two additional albums. In 2018, they appeared in the box office hit A Star is Born alongside Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga as Cooper’s character’s band. Nelson contributed to writing some of the music for the film as well.
