Thompson has been described as "a versatile virtuoso guitarist and a sharp observational singer/songwriter whose work burns with intelligence and dark emotion." He has earned several prestigious awards for his contributions to music, including an Ivor Novello Award and a lifetime achievement award from BBC Radio. He was also appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2011.
